The gemstone associated with a person's birth month is referred to as their birthstone. This idea is not new; it is rooted in the Bible. The twelve tribes of Israel are said to be represented by the twelve gemstones on Aaron's breastplate, the biblical priest. Jewish priests, historians, and scholars Josephus and St. Jerome connect these stones to zodiac signs in the first and fifth centuries. It was believed that a certain stone for each month of the zodiac contained strong vitality. Wearing your birthstone was believed to harness this vitality. Scripture references the use of gemstones as talismans and healing tools even before the significance of gemstones in astrology was recognized. The list was expanded to include contemporary birthstones after additional revisions. To believe in them is a matter only of faith.
