It is coinciding with the 360th anniversary of the very first recorded sighting of Mr. Punch. From all over the country, Punch & Judy Professors and Puppeteers gather in the Garden of St Paul’s Church to relive puppets and age-old traditions.

The story of this began in 1662. Diarist Samuel Pepys, known for his detailed chronicles of London life, documented when he witnessed “an Italian puppet play” in the Covent Garden area. This marked the earliest known reference to a Punch & Judy show in England.

Fast forward to 1976. The iconic Covent Garden fruit and vegetable market had relocated, and the area faced an uncertain future. The Covent Garden Community Association was determined to rejuvenate the place. 

Inspired by Pepys’ diary entry and the rich history of puppetry, a local arts organization called the Alternative Arts launched a street theatre initiative in 1975 under the iconic portico of St. Paul’s Church. This initiative blossomed into the Covent Garden May Fayre & Puppet Festival a year later. The festival is a celebration of Puch & Judy’s legacy.

The Covent Garden May Fayre & Puppet Festival will held in the Garden of St. Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, London WC2E 8QH, on the second Sunday in May. In 2024, it falls on Sunday, May 12th.
