Sapphires require no introduction. Since ancient times, hearts have been dominated by these corundum-based gemstones due to its remarkable color, clarity, symbolism, and magical qualities. Available in nearly every hue but red (only rubies stand out in this instance!). Sacred texts including the Bible and Vedas have references to sapphire gemstones. A Ceylonese Neelam, or blue sapphire stone in Hindi, was set in the center of the famous Diana blue sapphire engagement ring, encircled by brilliant diamonds. One of the most alluring rings of the day, it stood for devotion, fidelity, and love. The famous ornament, which is currently treasured by her daughter-in-law Princess Kate Middleton, was also handed down as hereditary jewelry to subsequent generations.
