Kelly Blatz plays ambitious gay director Loren, and opposite him is film bombshell Jacqueline Bisset (who I knew as villainous James in season 4 of FX’s Nip/Tuck), Rose, a reclusive and “notoriously difficult” actress who speaks fondly of her storied career. They first meet at the same restaurant Rose has been frequenting for fifteen years now to discuss a comeback role on the wings of Loren’s various short-film accolades. An instant connection is formed, a bond that bleeds through every second the duo share onscreen together. There is almost a mother/son vibe, only far more crude.

Kudos to Phil Sand who plays the quirky and irreverent waiter in this most excellent movie.

"Loren and Rose" unfolds almost entirely at a restaurant where the characters share three meals over the course of several years. But this lively film never feels like a rehash of "My Dinner with Andre" — even if the characters talk about art and experience, inspiration and validation. Here, they buoy each other's self-worth as they consider their lives, relationships, and careers.

Loren & Rose is tailored for an intelligent audience. While the film stands on its own, it helps to know Bisset’s history as a performer and her overall career trajectory. Will a viewer who doesn’t remember her from Bullit or Day for Night appreciate the film? Sure, but there’s just no denying that this back-pocket knowledge amplifies Brown’s intended effect.
